Tradescantia Today

Today I visited family in southwest Missouri prior to going to a friend’s wedding.  My mother’s land is full of native wildflowers…some in their appropriate places, others precariously positioned near horse trampling grounds.  For years we’ve been translating a handful of them to a flower garden in the front yard…in an attempt at a native flower garden.  Certain plants transplanted well while others didn’t.  Some of the easiest to transfer were Rose Verbena and native Spiderwort (Tradescantia spp.).  It is most likely Tradescantia ohiensis, but my taxonomic skills are a bit lacking on this one.  Plants flower profusely and display vibrant blues and purples.  Anywho, here are a couple of pictures taken this morning.

This is not a weed.  It could be in your native garden.

Grow native!  I will try to take pictures of the deeper purple flowers tomorrow…we’ll see.
